Mountaineering: The Freedom of
the Hills; softcover - 575 pages
by
Steven M. Cox,
Kris Fulsaas
Lee's
Review:
The unofficial bible of mountaineers and climbers, but this book
has many chapters that apply to hikers, backpackers, and canyoneers alike.
Some of the sections/chapters that I really enjoyed were Navigation, Belaying,
and Rappelling.
ON ROPE: North
American Vertical Rope Techniques; hardcover - 382 pages
by Bruce Smith and Allen Padgett
Lee's Review
If the above book is the mountaineer's bible, this book is the rope
handler's bible. Ropes, ties, riggings, rappelling, ascending, belaying,
gear handling, and training are all covered.
How to Climb: Rappelling;
softcover - 71 pages
by
Craig Luebben
Lee's Review:
A pretty good book to refresh your memory from the class, and it describes
advanced techniques as well. However, the black&white photographs are a
bit dark and hard to see.
Knots & Ropes for Climbers
(Outdoor and Nature); softcover - 86 pages
by
Duane Raleigh,
Mike Clelland
Lee's Review:
A great knot book with good illustrations
(no pictures). All the knots covered in the Technical Canyoneering Course are covered, including the Munter-Mule. Ropes and rope care are
also discussed, as is webbing and cords.
The Outdoor Knots Book
(Mountaineers Outdoor Basics), softcover - 154 pages
by
Clyde Soles
Lee's Review:
A very comprehensive book with more knots than other books. The
black&white pictures are a little small, however. Knots for "Camping &
Hiking" and "Kayaking and Canoeing" are also presented.
Knots for Climbers, 2nd (How To
Climb Series); softcover - 40 pages
by
Craig Luebben
Lee's Review:
A good knot book with fairly good
illustrations and some black&white photos, but not as comprehensive as the
other knot books.
